A Balanced Matcha Oat Milk Latte, Made at Home
At cafés, a matcha latte can easily cost over five dollars—especially when made with high-quality matcha and oat milk. While it’s a comforting treat, it’s not always something you want to rely on every day.
We spent time experimenting at home: testing different oat milk brands, adjusting sweetness levels, and refining ratios. The result is a matcha oat milk latte that feels light yet satisfying—creamy without heaviness, gently sweet, and centered around the flavor of matcha itself.
Choosing the Right Matcha
For oat milk lattes, we recommend using a ceremonial grade matcha that’s smooth and well-balanced.
Both our Superior Ceremonial Matcha and Organic Ceremonial Matcha work well. If we had to choose, the Organic Ceremonial Matcha pairs slightly better with oat milk, complementing its natural sweetness without being overshadowed.
A Note on Oat Milk and Sweetness
Oat milk is naturally sweeter than dairy milk. This sweetness comes from the breakdown of oat starches into simple sugars during processing.
Because of this, it’s important to account for the sugar already present in your oat milk before adding any sweetener.
Our preferred oat milk contains about 8 grams of sugar per cup. With this level of sweetness, we add just ½ teaspoon of powdered brown sugar, keeping the latte mild enough for the matcha flavor to remain clear.
Different brands vary significantly. Some oat milks are noticeably sweeter, in which case no additional sweetener may be needed at all. Reading labels and adjusting accordingly makes a meaningful difference.
How to Mix Matcha for This Recipe
For this particular latte, we recommend whisking the matcha and water in a small bowl using a bamboo whisk.
Because the matcha mixture is relatively thick, shaking it in a bottle can lead to uneven mixing and unnecessary waste. Battery-operated frothers also tend to clump when working with higher matcha concentrations.
A blender works, but we usually avoid it due to extra cleanup.
If you’re making the latte directly in a tall glass, a longer bamboo whisk with a smaller head can be helpful and more comfortable to use.

A good matcha oat milk latte doesn’t need excess sweetness or complicated techniques. When the matcha is well chosen and the balance is right, simplicity does the work.
